How to calculate thinset mortar
Thinset mortar (also called thin-set, thinset cement, or dryset mortar) is the adhesive used to bond tile to the substrate. The amount you need depends primarily on your trowel notch size, which determines how thick the mortar bed is.
Coverage by trowel notch size
These coverage rates are per 50-lb bag of standard thinset mortar and are based on manufacturer specifications:
- 1/4" × 1/4" square-notch: ~95 sq ft per bag — For small mosaics and wall tiles up to 8×8.
- 1/4" × 3/8": ~75 sq ft per bag — The most common size. Standard for floor tiles up to 12×12.
- 1/2" × 1/2": ~45 sq ft per bag — For large-format tiles (13×13 to 20×20).
- 1/2" × 3/4": ~30 sq ft per bag — For very large format tiles (24×24 and bigger). These tiles often require back-buttering.
Choosing the right trowel size
The general rule: the trowel notch depth should provide enough mortar for 85–95% coverage on the back of the tile when pressed into place. Larger tiles need deeper notches. For tiles over 15 inches on any side, many manufacturers and the TCNA recommend both combing the substrate and back-buttering the tile.
Modified vs. unmodified thinset
Modified (polymer-modified): Contains latex polymers for better adhesion and flexibility. Use over plywood substrates, for larger tiles, and exterior installations.
Unmodified: Standard cement-based mortar. Required under TCNA guidelines for use with membrane systems like Ditra, and over concrete substrates with good mechanical bond.
