How to calculate square footage
Rectangles and Squares
The vast majority of rooms are rectangular. Simply measure the length and the width in feet, and multiply them together. (Area = length × width).
L-Shaped Rooms
For an L-shaped room, imagine a line that splits the room into two separate rectangles. Measure the length and width of the first rectangle, and then the length and width of the second rectangle. The total area is the sum of the two.
Triangles
If you have an angled wall creating a triangular space, measure the base (the flat side) and the height (the distance from the base to the opposite point). Area = (base × height) ÷ 2.
Measuring in inches
If you prefer to measure your room in inches for better accuracy, multiply the length in inches by the width in inches. Then divide the result by 144 to convert it back to square feet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure an oddly shaped room?
Break the room down into a series of smaller rectangles and triangles. Calculate the area of each individual shape, then add them all together to get the total square footage.
Do I subtract cabinets from my kitchen floor square footage?
Usually, yes. Permanent base cabinets that sit directly on the subfloor should be subtracted from your total floor area. However, always tile under freestanding appliances like stoves and refrigerators.
